In the 1950s, a marketing agency ran an ad in tabloid advertising for a course on how to play the piano.
The ad, which ran with the headline, “Put Music In Your Life,” performed well… and delivered a sizable return for the agency.
But then something remarkable happened…
As the legend goes, during the printing process, an error was made to the headline.
The change was so small that no one, including the agency’s copyeditor, noticed the misprint.
The result?
Orders tripled.
What’s interesting, though, is the error was not typographical. Nor was the error related to the headline’s “cosmetics” such as its type or size.
To the advertisers’ surprise, the error was the accidental inclusion of one letter…
The letter “s.”
The old headline, “Put Music In Your Life,” implied doing work to achieve the desired result…
The new headline, “Puts Music In Your Life,” alluded to having the work done for you.
One headline… One misprint… Three times as many orders.
That one story that illustrates the persuasive power of well-written headlines…
Yet, it’s something countless marketers overlook the importance of, often, without even realizing…
Writing Headlines Used to Be Hard. Now I Do This…
Let’s face it:
Online marketing is getting harder.
With more than two million blog posts published every day and thousands of emails vying for your buyer’s attention… it’s never been more competitive.
I know that better than anyone.
In 2017, I joined a fast-growing startup to grow their blog through organic search.
And I felt way over my head.
I knew how to build a blog, having grown my own to 1.5+ million annual visitors.
But grow a new marketing blog from scratch… with a limited budget… going up against industry giants like Entrepreneur, Forbes, and Inc., among others?
I felt like David, competing with several (financially-backed) Goliaths.
I had my work cut out for me. That was a given.
But I was determined to give it my best effort.
So, I pulled up my bootstraps, and did the only thing I knew how to do better than anyone…
Look at what the fastest-growing brands were doing in other markets… and reverse-engineer their strategies.
I analyzed the length of their content, how they structured their pages, their backlink profiles… everything I could do to infer how they were driving visitors from Google to their websites.
And it didn’t take long for me to discover something fascinating…
The biggest brands were using variations of proven headline formulas.
It didn’t matter whether it was a prestigious Ivy-league university…
Or a 7-figure online retailer like Bodybuilding.com…
The websites ranking the highest in Google all followed winning headline formulas… formulas that I could model for my employer’s blog.
With that knowledge, I started building a resource that many copywriters suggest having, but few maintain…
A swipe file for tested and proven headline formulas.
Anytime I saw a great headline formula—one that several brands were using—I took a screenshot, added it to Notion, broke the headline down into its key components… and tagged it by category.
I’ve been building and referencing my swipe file for years. More, it’s helped me write headlines that have resulted in thousands of clicks and conversions for my employer’s blog and my own.
That’s why, today, I want to invite you to get access… so you too can learn how to write magnetic headlines for your marketing materials… even if you’re not a writer.
Introducing: Sam’s Headline Shortcuts
Sam’s Headlines Shortcuts is my swipe file with more than 100 proven and tested marketing headlines from more than a dozen industries.
From marketing to music, travel to lifestyle… I’ve taken the best headlines from the biggest market leaders… and broken them down into swipeable, plug-and-play formulas.
Whether you’re an ad copywriter looking for your next winning headline idea…
Or a content marketer hoping to drive more clicks and conversions to a blog post…
Or even an aspiring online writer looking to learn how to write headlines that invite readers to read your work…
I guarantee you will find a headline formula you can profit from today.
Here’s What’s Included…
- Categories for Convenience. I’ve tagged each headline by category—authority, scarcity, urgency—to facilitate skim reading and easy reference. Look for a headline of interest, filter by tag, and you’re ready to go.
- Plug-and-Play Headline Formulas. I’ve broken each headline down into its key components. All you need to do is pick a headline, plug in the details (a number, an adjective, a keyword), and it’s ready for testing.
- Dozens of Industry Examples. While it would have been easy to build a swipe file of marketing headlines, my interests are diverse and take me far and wide. From health and fitness to news and current affairs, there’s something for everyone.
- Notes for Greater Context. What I love about headline formulas is their flexibility; there’s always room for improvement. I’ve added notes for certain headlines to give more context on how you can use each to their full advantage.
- Different Views. If there’s one thing I love about Notion, it’s its immense versatility. Use Notion’s gallery view to get a 30,000-foot overview of all my headline formulas… without having to open each page each time.
- Search Functionality. Prefer to search by brand or keyword? No problem. Use Notions’s search feature to browse your favorite headlines fast, with no added effort on your part.
