I defy anyone to read Create or Hate and not be fired into action to stop thinking and start doing. Dare I say--an even more inspiring call to creative action than Big Magic?

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2016This was a very quick read, but it was such a motivating piece for me. From the moment I began reading Create or Hate, author Dan Norris is exempt from the well-worn nonsense that bubbles out of the pores of other self-help writers currently plying their trade. I loved the direct nature of this book. There are so many uplifting and quotable quotes within here—whether you're a struggling novelist, a painter, an actor—or even if you're just a person who hates your crappy day job with a burning passion, there is absolutely something here for you to reap mental benefits from. I promise you! Sometimes I allow that bastard nemesis Hate to lock me into a submission hold when it comes to forward progress, but I try my damnedest to get to the ropes and make a Hogan-like comeback (pro wrestling analogy). What this author does (and what he does so well) is attempt to have you focus primarily on YOURSELF.
Don't pay attention to the other cars on that jam-packed highway of creation. Stay in your lane, make something of yourself, and if it doesn't pan out for you, oh well! At least you tried, at least you did your best. And that's the best message to take away from this book. Thrive to maintain your drive. Or else you're barely alive. Feeling like you're dead isn't fun. So, go and do that mind grind already.
Here's a personal message to those of you who dream to do: no matter what creative field you're playing in right now, keep doing it. Don't falter. You have a talent that needs to be fully realized; before you aren't here anymore.
All in all, this is just a powerful little number and I can't say enough about the lasting effect it has had on me. Recommended for people who beat themselves up far too often, and for all of the people who feel like they're never "quite there yet" regardless of whatever it is that they do with their creativity....so basically, Create or Hate is highly recommended for everybody in this move-move-move, modern world.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2016Even if some factors that lead successful people to find success could be attributed to sheer luck, a common trait is that successful people create things. In Norris' vision, creativity has little to do with wild talent and is more to productivity. The first requisite for being creative is start to do something.
The author is not shy about his own failures and learned lessons. For me, this showing himself vulnerable by reflecting about his own experiences is what makes the book valuable.
In his book The War of Art, Steven Pressfield writes about "The Resistance", the voice that delays us from doing our work, the self-sabotaging habits of procrastination, self-doubt, susceptibility to distraction, perfectionism, and shallowness. Dan Norris' nemesis to creativity is Hate.
"Haters don't create anything, and instead get caught up in a never-ending cycle of Hate feeding Hate and criticism triumphing over creation." The hate ecosystem nurtures from negative people that may surround us or work with us. However, what most hinders our capacity to do things is own self-hate.
"It turns out that people can be very good at making up reasons [for not making things]. Not all reasons are invalid, but we have to beware of Hate breeding excuses." Common excuses are, for example:
– it’s expensive
– I don’t want to divide my attention
– I don’t want to be one of those guys/gals that teaches people something before they know it themselves.
– There is too much effort needed to start
– The learning curve. I will definitely suck at the first try
– I see no purpose to get it going
– I don’t have what it takes
The second half of the book is about how to fight hate. For conquering hate, we need to accept that failure as part of the creative process, an essential part of creating anything. Self awareness and gratefulness are our allies in our fight for being creative.
I specially liked to chapter on how empathy breeds creativity. Empathy is hard, and not commonly understood. "Your goal in being empathic is to imagine what it’s like to be that person and feel what they are feeling. If you can improve your empathy, you improve your imagination. And imagination is the source of all creativity."
The final chapter is about how to be creative, in the form of practical advice that can give you some ideas on how to improve your creative process.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2016For some reason, my brain decided that 4:30 am is a great time to get up today. So after an hour of trying to fall back into a dreamless slumber, I thought I'd do something productive with my time.
So I went ahead and read Dan Norris's latest book, "Create Or Hate: Successful People Make Things".
It's a 70 pages book (on Kindle) that will help you get into the doer mindset. It's not fancy, it's not bewilderingly complex, but IT WORKS!
It gets the message across and it acts like the proverbial kick in the rear we all need to stop making excuses and just start creating that thing we always wanted.
I really enjoyed reading it, because you can tell that it's the work of a person who has worked, tried and fai... course corrected, and who keep making things and learning from these experiences.
As a result, I'll be finally starting to write more on my .com blog, which I've been meaning to do for the past 3-4 years, but never got around to.

5.0 out of 5 stars So many gems, I'll be reading this again!
Thanks Dan for giving me a kick in the arse! I'm described so many times in this book that it was like you were writing this to me. There's nuggets throughout the entire book that kept me coming back to the questions I need to ask - what am I creating, am I just consuming, and of course where the hate comes in to my every day? So, I'm getting creating, not worrying about it being perfect, and working on my passion with more determination and purpose than I have before. I already made a huge batch of fancy chocolates...more than I needed for an order because now I can get selling the extras. Do I have packaging...nope! Who cares, they're freaking delicious and I'll buy the pretty packaging later, right now people will get to taste these lovely sweets and that will get them buying more! No more being a entrepornographer! Ha, that term is awesome! I'm telling all my peeps to read this, you're awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I loved Dan's book "The 7 Day Startup" and this is great too. It's written in the same style of no fluff, to the point, and easy to read. Some great takeaway's from this book with good advice (and reminders of good advice) that are easy to implement, and may be just what a lot of people need to prompt them into action. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Success is what happens when you create things
I’ve been a fan of Dan Norris’ hands-on yet analytical style ever since I launched a website within days of finishing “The 7 day startup”. Dan has since published a number of further books, and “Create or Hate” is his newest.
The hypothesis in “Create or Hate” is that you need to create things in order to be successful. Create more, learn from your mistakes, and you have a chance at success. Yes, circumstances need to line up, but if you you’re avoiding failure at all cost and don’t create anything, your chance at success is minimal.
Creativity is thus the force that makes us successful. Unfortunately, Creativity has an antagonist, and Dan calls it ‘Hate’. Hate makes us come up with all kinds of excuses and seemingly valid reasons to prevent us from creating stuff. Success is what happens when we manage to keep Hate in check and creativity takes the stage.
Dan breaks down the various forms Hate can take. The explicit goal of the book is to get us to create things. A major part of the book is therefore spent on strategies of how to disarm Hate and how to create an environment where your creativity can succeed.
A lot of typical excuses and common fears are addressed, and I’m sure most readers will recognize several. When called for, Dan uses clear words: “You don’t need permission. You’re not a child anymore”.
The book is intentionally kept short and it’s an easy and entertaining read. If you need motivation, why not pick it up and re-read it occasionally? If you take the book's content to heart, you will start creating things.
While I haven’t quite started writing entire books on flights (like Dan), at least this book review was written on a plane and published as soon as I was in an airport lounge. It works!
